Favorite Things #21 - Yasha From Russia

You might be asking yourself who in the world is Yasha from Russia?? Well, Yasha is a man who owns a Russian market in Phoenix that is actually named "Yasha From Russia". I grew up in Western PA where there is a lot of German and Polish influence on food. So even at our school cafeteria we would be served pierogies and people ate a lot of kielbasa, haluski and sauerkraut. I grew up eating these foods and get nostalgic for a good pierogi every once in a while. Yasha always has home made pierogies or 'dumplings' so I love his store. He also has over 30 kinds of salami and cured meats. This is what I picked up last time I visited.

I got beef sticks, flavored cheese, Hungarian salami, and two kinds of dumplings. The cheese dumplings actually have vanilla and sugar in them so they are both savory and sweet, and my husband LOVES them. So strange, but I am not questioning him :)

Do you have a favorite food from growing up that is unique or hard to find?

  2. I make the same dumplings at home, the country I come from was part of Soviet Union so we have a lot of Russian influence in our food, and life in general, but pierogies are the best they remind me of my childhood!

  3. That's great! It's so hard to find food for the picky eaters.
From my childhood...I can't say. I think I used to LOVE bugles (you know, the chip things that you could put on your fingers to look like witch nails) but they don't sell them anywhere now! I think I have only seen them once in the past 5 years, in some small corner store

  4. It's really hard to find Filipino food here in Boston so I am always craving for treats from home! That salami looks good!

  6. I miss my Grandma's chicken and dumplings. That reminds me of childhood. I can't recreate them for anything. I've tried about 16,271,304 times too!

  9. I actually have never thought that PA has more German and Polish influence even in food culture there. Maybe Mexican food here is similar influence over here. Beef stick sounds interesting. It's like beef jerky? My husband seems to like that.
